Air Impact Wrench - Buying Guidelines

A pneumatic wrench is one of the most powerful and commonly used tools in most automotive shops.

The pneumatic wrench is a socket wrench power tool designed to render high torque output with minimal exertion by the operator, by storing energy in a rotating mass, then supplying it suddenly to the output shaft.

The pneumatic wrench is also known as:
- impact wrench
- impactor
- air wrench
- air gun
- rattle gun
- torque gun

The most common power source for air guns is compressed air, although electric or hydraulic power is also widely used

There is an increasingly popular design of pheumatic wrench, namely the battery powered cordless type. Advances in battery storage technology mean this category of impact wrench is especially popular for the mobile machanic and home prosumer.

Impact wrenches are commonly used in numerousindustries, which include: automotive repair; heavy equipment maintenance; product assembly (often known as "pulse tools" and developed for precise torque output); major construction projects, and any other instance where a high torque output is needed.

Impact wrenches are on the market in every standard socket wrench drive size, for instance:small 1/4" drive tools for small assembly and disassembly, up to 3.5" and larger square drives for major construction and heavy duty industrial situations. Impact wrenches are one of the most favored air tools, and are found in just about all automotive mechanic shops.

Impact wrenches are available in all standard socket sizes and in several styles, depending on the application.

- The smaller 1/4" drive wrench is commonly available in both 'inline' (used in a similar manner as a hand screwdriver), and pistol grip styles (as the name suggests, held like a pistol). A more uncommon design is the angle drive wrench. This is similar to an inline wrench tool, with the addition of a set of bevel gears to rotate the output end 90 degrees to the handle grip.

- Impact wrenches of the 3/8" size are most commonly available in pistol grip type. Also on the market is a special inline type regarded as a "butterfly" wrench, which has a large, flat throttle paddle on one side of the tool which may be tilted to one side or the other to handle the direction of rotation, rather than using a separate reversing control. This unique design feature permits access into small work areas.

- Typical inline and angle 3/8" drive impact wrenches are uncommon, although they are available from speciality store outlets.

- Impact wrench 1/2" drive units are almost only available in pistol grip type, with any inline type difficult to find, mainly due to the increased torque given back to the operator and the greater weight of the tool requiring the larger handle.

- Impact wrench 3/4" drive impact wrenches once again essentially only available in pistol grip form.

- Impact air wrenchs of the 1" size are obtainable in both pistol grip and "D handle" inline models. The latter design features an enclosed handle grip on the back of the tool. Both of these styles often feature a side handle, allowing both hands to hold the tool at once.

- Impact drive tools 1.25" and greater wrenches are usually readily available in "T handle" variety, with two big handles on either side of the tool body, allowing for optimum torque to be applied by the operator, and getting the best control of the tool.

Pneumatic wrenches require sockets in order to carry out their task. Its also important to use proper sockets. Special impact sockets are designed to take the drive of these powerful tools. An average socket will fatigue under such high torque scenarios. Thus, it is recommend to spend money on the best air impact wrench and matching sockets your budget provides.
