Pneumatic Impact Wrench - Overview

A pneumatic wrench is one of the most powerful and commonly used tools in the majority of auto workshops.

The pneumatic wrench is a socket wrench power tool designed to deliver high torque output with minimal effort by the operator, by storing energy in a rotating mass, then supplying it suddenly to the output shaft.

The pneumatic wrench is also referred to as:
- impact wrench
- impactor
- air wrench
- air gun
- rattle gun
- torque gun

The most popular power source for air guns is compressed air, although electric or hydraulic power is also used

The third class of impact wrench is the cordless electric design, which is increasingly popular given the advances with stored energy battery technology.

Impact wrenches are widely used in lots ofindustries, most notably: automotive repair; heavy equipment maintenance; product assembly (often called "pulse tools" and engineered for precise torque output); major construction projects, and any other instance where a high torque output is required.

Impact wrenches are available in every standard socket wrench drive size, for instance:small 1/4" drive tools for small assembly and disassembly, up to 3.5" and larger square drives for major construction and heavy duty industrial purposes. Impact wrenches are one of the most commonly used air tools, and are found in most automotive mechanic shops.

Impact wrenches are available in the market in all conventional socket sizes and in various styles, depending on the purpose.

- The smaller 1/4" drive wrench is commonly available in both 'inline' (the user holds the tool like a screwdriver), and pistol grip styles (the user holds a handle grip, which is at right angles to the socket end). A less common style is the angle drive wrench. This style share similar design featurs to the inline impact wrench tool

- Impact wrenches of the 3/8" size are most commonly available in pistol grip form. Also on the market is a specialized inline form regarded as a "butterfly" wrench, which has a large, flat throttle paddle on the side of the tool which can be tilted to one side or the other to handle the direction of rotation, rather than using a separate reversing control. This unique design feature enables access into restricted work areas.

- Typical inline and angle 3/8" drive impact wrenches are uncommon, although they are available from speciality store outlets.

- Impact wrench 1/2" drive units are basically only available in pistol grip type, with any inline type difficult to find, mainly due to the greater torque fed back to the operator and the increased weight of the tool requiring the larger handle.

- Impact wrench 3/4" drive impact wrenches just as before basically only available on the market in pistol grip form.

- Impact air wrenchs of the 1" size are readily available in both pistol grip and "D handle" inline models. The latter design features an enclosed handle grip on the back of the tool. These two styles often consist of a side handle, enabling both hands to hold the tool at once.

- Impact air wrenchs 1.25" and bigger wrenches are usually available in "T handle" form, with two large handles on either side of the tool body, allowing for highest possible torque to be used by the operator, and giving the best control of the tool.

Pneumatic wrenches require sockets in order to carry out their purpose. Its also necessary to use quality sockets. Specific impact sockets are designed to take the drive of these powerful tools. An average socket will not last long under such high torque scenarios. Thus, it is recommend to buy the best air impact wrench and matching sockets your budget allows.
